How to use a mala?

• Begin by holding the mala in one hand, often the right, though the left is not incorrect.

• Drape the mala over your middle finger, starting with the bead to the left of the guru bead.

• Then recite a mantra, prayer, an affirmation or intention once for each bead, gently moving to the next bead with your thumb as you go. Many chose to rotate through each bead silently, though audibly spoken mantras, prayers, etc. may be more comfortable for your practice.

The physical act of moving from bead to bead helps an individual to remain present and focused, as well as providing a rhythm to their practice.

• When you reach the guru bead again, you don't cross over it. Instead, you simply turn the mala around and continue in the opposite direction.

Why 108 beads?

Historically, there are a few universal and spiritual traditions to note the significance of the number 108. It has been documented as a number of spiritual completeness, as well as having symbolic importance in the world of numerology as a numerically perfect number.

Interestingly, the average distance from Earth to the Sun is about 108 times the Sun's diameter, and the average distance from Earth to the Moon is about 108 times the Moon's diameter.

While the classic mala has 108 beads, you may also utilize a shorter mala for a shorter practice. Some malas have 27 beads, a quarter mala, often referred to as a travel mala, or 54 beads, a half mala. A wrist mala contains 18 or 21 beads for a brief, wearable, meditation session.

Hand-tied mala prices vary widely, often depending on the material, gemstone, or intricacy of the mala. A travel mala may range from $25 to $60, while a full 108-bead mala may range anywhere from $80 to $350.
