When a mirrored boot drive fails, some admins take the shortcut:

Remove the disk.

Run `vgreduce`.

Hope nothing hangs.

And sometimes… it works.

Until the volume group metadata is damaged.

Then those I/O calls hang forever and the only way out is a reboot you didn’t plan.

- Take the physical volume offline
- Remove each mirror properly
- Rebuild the boot disk safely
- Re-sync the volumes

But it avoids turning a routine drive swap into a full system outage.
