Oh little this funky-petaled zinnia has sent me into a deep spiral of life ponderings. Let me share a mental snippet…

If you swipe and watch the video of the current zinnia row, you will see I planted an assortment of mixes as well as a few color specific varieties. This curly girl as emerged from the Johnny's Selected Seeds Ballerina mix. All the others, are more behaved but this one is sporting a wild tutu per say. She is unexpected and stands out in an almost frustrating way because she looks like she is tired or on her way out even though she has so many more layers that only time will unravel. I feel that. All of that and so much more. I think (and have been told) I was given more vision in my one pinky than most people have in their whole being. It’s amazing but it’s also weighted with a deep sense of responsibility and for someone who feels like life is fleeting it’s more often than not daunting.

I miss this days of Airbnb hosting and sharing this extraordinary space with others. I wish I could swipe my fingers and projects would complete themselves so I could open the gates again. I know the days of overnight guest stays are far off in the future but I have been thinking of small ways to crack the gate open. A “Treehouse Club” for people seeing a quiet space to escape for a few hours? Maybe fence off a “Sniff Spot” area for dog lovers? The Gathering room as a co-working space? A area for people to have a place to grieve? I want to do them all. If you know me personally, I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you.

I don’t know how or when it’s all going to unfold, but it will… eventually. Until then, I want to express my deep gratitude to the people who have seen me in person since my last post and commented on how they loved hearing from me as well as those who have popped by and said how wonderful everything is coming together around here. For a girl who can grow her own flowers, your kind words are my “flowers” so thank you for giving them to me. They fuel me in ways I often don’t know I need and I’ll keep cultivating beauty because of them. Thank you all and stay tuned for what is next. 😉

☀️July has been full in the best way. Keeping the plants going through the Georgia heat is an indescribable challenge but so very worth it to see so much variety in our tiny harvests. The bounty is significantly less as most of the perennials that carry us in June are done. The lissianthus wave went fast and the dahlias are conserving their energy through the heat wave. 🔥

Every couple weeks the farm transforms and there is something new taking center stage. Thankfully, the wide assortment of heat loving zinnias are now having their moment while being complimented by the delphiniums and peach foxgloves are in their second flush. The marigolds and a few trial plantings are starting to bud up so August bouquets are going to be spectacular! Even though we haven’t had enough to open the farmstand regularly, it’s been a treat to cut to order Farmer’s Choice Wraps for the pre-order cooler with 10-20 different species of flowers! 🥳

Thank you to everyone who reaches out for our fresh, grown-not-flown flowers! Your support means the world to us and this year it even meant I was able to sneak away to the beach for a real family vacation with the bros last week and celebrate with Reider for his 15th birthday. Every bouquet, share, comment, and story tag help us continue growing on a micro-scale right here in Cherokee County. 💓

💯Hot Stuff!

There is no bloom more appropriate to celebrate making it through another half year of farming than lisianthus! These ruffled masterpieces take nearly a full year to go from seed to harvest! 3 months of twice a day misting to get them to a transplant size, then they travel from our plug supplier on PA to us back in October. They went into the greenhouse and have been slowly growing there ever since. I experimented with some supplemental lighting to try to get them to bloom earlier than their usual timeline, which is 4th of July week, a notoriously slow week for flower sales. I think I learned how to adjust for next year but the good news is that they are finally available! For those of you who are not traveling for the 4th, please consider scooping up some of these beauties. They have the longest vase life out of all of our crops and we have some incredible summer standouts to pair with them! Just over 5 years ago, my brother Danny Pelaez came in town with a small bag full of black seeds. He said he collected them off of some kind of lily that grew in his area but that he didn’t know what kind it was. Somehow those seeds germinated and a handful of plants have been growing steadily. Each year I have hoped a bloom would emerge to crack the identity mystery. Every winter, they would die back and all I could do was pray it would survive another year. Each spring I would move a few of them around to see if the lighting would make a difference but also to mitigate the risk of total loss in case an animal or disease took out an area. A few weeks ago what looked like a bud started emerging from one of the plants. This weekend it bloomed. A true tiger lily. It’s not seen often as they are highly poisonous to cats, so most growers don’t keep them.

All of that to say, it has been a lesson in patience and trusting timelines will unfold precisely when the good Lord says. Yesterday had a series of micro moments that had me sensing my plans for today were going to shift out of my control but that I should lean in with confidence of the good that would come of it. Sure enough, I got to watch two of my worlds collide such a way that has left me teary-eyed with gratitude and cheeks that ache from smiling ear to ear for hours on end. Sitting on the sidelines and watching divine timing in real time is something I will never tire of. To those in waiting, hang in here, it worth letting things unfold on their own. Make like a tiger lily and just keep coming back year after year with slow but steady growth. Beauty is coming.

A quick farmstand update for this weekend:
The stand will be open Sunday for pre-order pickup only. Pre-orders will close Saturday at 6 PM as our family will be celebrating Joshua’s high school graduation on Saturday 🎓✨
