Application during the three months preceding the birth month provides an effective date for Medicare of the first of the month of the birth month. Any application after the preceding 3 months will result in an effective date of the first of the month after age 65. Application made any time after the 7-month initial enrollment period can only be done in the upcoming GEP (General Election Period) which is from January 1 through March 31 and has an effective date of July 1. The exception to this is for those who have a deferred enrollment for Part B due to having other credible health coverage such as company benefits.
