Meet Journey, a rock pigeon!

Journey came to Save A Soul Animal Rescue from a wildlife rehabber who deemed her as unreleasable due to a former injury as a chick that left her with a deformed leg. Only having one leg doesn't stop Journey! She gets around as well as the other pigeons. Take a look at her flying, taking baths, and foraging for treats, and you wouldn't even guess anything is wrong! She's an extremely affectionate bird who loves her people and her flock.

That's right! Save A Soul Animal Rescue takes in pigeons. According to the Colorado Department of Agriculture, pigeons are considered livestock. All of our pigeons are housed inside with an outdoor 'vacation' home. This keeps them safe and allows them to have a much bigger area than a strictly outdoor enclosure would allow. The pigeon loft is approximately 684 square feet. I also have two 5 foot by 2 foot cages that the birds can choose to spend time in. These cages allow for nesting boxes, extra perches, and give Save A Soul Animal Rescue the ability to separate new birds to let them meet the flock before having to live with them. In addition to the two large cages, the pigeons also have access to two dog kennels to give them a safe place to lay eggs, sleep, and separate if they need a break from the main flock. Everyone needs a break from their family sometimes! The main mess you can expect from pigeons is their seed getting kicked everywhere. They don't smell and their p**p is mostly solid. They're very affectionate animals and make great pets!

Doodle is a silkie rooster. Did you know that silkies have an extra toe?

Doodle was raised in a loving home since he was 5 days old. His family was under the assumption that Doodle was a hen. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The day that Doodle crowed his family started looking for a safe place for Doodle to live out his days. Unfortunately, while you can keep chickens in Colorado Springs city limits, you can not keep roosters. There's very few options for roosters. Nine times out of ten, the rooster ends up getting eaten. Thankfully we had space open up and we were able to bring Doodle in and offer him a home!

Dixie says there's nothing better than a massage after breakfast!

Valentine the blind Rhode Island Red hen recently celebrated her 8th birthday! Did you know that chickens have a lifespan of 8-12 years? However, the average meat chicken lives for only 6 weeks. A large scale egg production hen will live for 2 years before getting sent to slaughter.

Thank you to a generous neighbor who donated fresh watermelon for our birds! They loved the treat!
