Highlights from the concrete canoe race day at the ASCE Symposium!

Our canoe passed the Swamp Test! This test requires teams to completely fill their canoe with water, then push the canoe a foot below the water surface. The canoe must float back up to the surface for teams to be aloud to race.

Our team placed 3rd in the women’s sprint! There were nine total canoe teams at the competition. Our women sprinters placed 5th place in the pre-race, qualifying them to compete in the finals race. During the final sprint, our team placed for 3rd!

Shoutout to all our racers!
Women’s Sprint: Rilee & Mehana
Men’s Sprint: Jayden, Wayne & Rhett
Coed Sprint: Rilee, Maria, Jared & Mattias

Last week some of our ASCE officers went to Twin Bridges school to do a presentation on civil engineering at a STEM careers day. The group of middle and high schoolers were very engaged and asked great questions! Our club is grateful for this opportunity.

Here are some pictures from our Timber-strong Design-Build Team’s competition.

Montana Tech’s structure featured a 6’x6’ footprint with 2 stories at 11’ in height. The design and construction was completed per current building codes, with emphasis on showing the load path throughout the building.

The team had to design for a 4’ cantilever beam to exit the structure between the 1st and 2nd floor that would be tested with 150lbs. The beam had to deflect between 0.5” and 1.0”. Our team successfully tested at 0.675” of deflection and a construction time of 49 minutes.

Overall, the team placed 1st in the competition and 1st and BIM design. Thanks for sponsoring this event!

Thanks for the great photos!

Meet Bret Robertson!

Bret is our amazing ASCE club advisor. He is an Assistant Professor and Lab Director for the Civil Engineering department at Tech. Bret chose civil engineering as a career “due to the broad range of disciplines and the huge demand for infrastructure and construction across the world.” Originally from Ardmore, Oklahoma, Bret enjoys cooking, eating, and four wheel drive trails with his family.

Meet Jayden Petroff!

Jayden is our concrete canoe row team captain. He is a senior civil engineering student from Miles City, Montana. Jayden chose to study civil engineering because "I did drafting in high school and really enjoyed it. I orginally was going to study mechanical engineering, but wanted to do more construction work." Jayden enjoys side by siding, being outdoors, hunting, and he even does a little fishing.

Meet this year’s Sustainable Solutions team!🏡 Our team will be competing at the regional ASCE symposium next week. The competition requires teams to make sustainable improvements to a made-up “Downtown City of ASCE.” Sustainable improvements include multimodal transportation features, storm water infrastructure, and a new community center.
