Balancing Aerodynamics & Rotor Dynamics: A SoftInWay Consulting Project

When it comes to upgrading turbomachinery, you can’t redesign in a vacuum. Every change to the flow path or aerodynamic performance directly impacts rotor dynamics, stability, and reliability.

That’s why a holistic design approach, one that connects aerodynamic and rotor-bearing analysis, is essential.

In this consulting project, SoftInWay’s engineers worked with a client to upgrade a four-stage centrifugal compressor for higher flow capacity. Using AxSTREAM RotorDynamics, our team analyzed how the aerodynamic redesign affected the rotor-bearing system and ensured the machine’s stability and compliance with API 617 and 684 standards.

Our engineering process included:

✅ Creating a detailed digital model of the upgraded compressor in AxSTREAM.
✅ Assessing the interplay between aerodynamic forces and rotor-bearing response.
✅ Performing a bearing sensitivity study to evaluate key stability parameters.
✅ Redesigning the bearings to achieve optimal damping and stable operation.
✅ Validating the complete system through simulation to confirm API compliance.

This project illustrates why aerodynamics and rotor dynamics must evolve together, and how SoftInWay’s integrated design methodology helps engineers upgrade machinery with confidence, ensuring both performance and stability.

Small engine, big impact.

UAV Turbines set out to bring a new generation of high-performance microturbines to the UAV market, and turned to SoftInWay’s platform to make it happen. Check out this case study, where you can see how they utilized the software for custom compressor and turbine design, as well as full cycle analysis. They developed the Monarch 5: a high-speed (100,000+ RPM) engine designed for reliability, heavy fuel operation, low noise, and high efficiency.

The result was a major milestone. The Monarch 5 successfully powered a TigerShark UAV during its first flight at Griffiss Airport, flying quieter and smoother than comparable internal combustion systems.
