Benny Rietveld
currently Bassist and Musical Director for Carlos Santana Bassist, Composer, Producer, Musical Director. All genders, races and cultures welcome here.
Hate is never welcome.
This offering from the last show may be considered blasphemous by some, however, it’s my tribute to a great song and a love letter to a great era in music.
And I can’t say enough about the talent, diligence and professionalism of this crew to be able to pull this off with little or (for some) no rehearsal, as well as the Baked Potato staff who are always above and beyond!

I didn’t want to leave you with the impression that I was trying to be some serious Blues artist (the spirit of John Lee Ho**er would come and s***f me out).
So just to clarify… this is more the musical style on tap for “SINGLES NIGHT” at the Baked Potato.
And for real, NO Broadway tunes. Definitely some new music though, and of course… always a few surprises.
So come down, join the madness, feel like a human again, and witness Actual Intelligence at work.

𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿, 𝗝𝗿., - who, in 1960, became one of the first Asian-American jazz artists to gain worldwide recognition - took a couple of fresh-faced youths under his wing. The combination of his musical prowess, the efforts of several plucky jazz DJs, and an unknown fine dining restaurant at the edge of Waikiki, begat a stunning and almost unparalleled rebirth of jazz in Hawaii.
"𝗔 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗔𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿" is a fun homage to Gabe, Hawaii Jazz radio, and The Cavalier. It features four key members of Gabe’s band at the time, together for the first time in 45 years. The show also features several other figures that were a part of that heady scene, plus some new and upcoming faces, in the spirit of Gabe’s inspiring and continual mentorship. There are a few guest surprises also, to be announced at a later date.
𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗮 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲 is a fitting venue for the show, where, by the late 1970s, it also established itself as the premier spot for upcoming contemporary works by new visionaries, mirroring the rise of modern jazz in Hawaii.
It’s been an amazing journey for so many. Come and relive, or experience for the first time, some of that journey!

𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗔𝗡𝗜 𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗢𝗧 will also be debuting a gorgeous new song of his as well.
So, in addition to the insane players in the band, AND the inimitable 𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗛 𝗞𝗔𝗩𝗘 on cello, there are TWO more reasons to fall by my end of year extravaganza at the Baked Potato!
