Gutter Pop Comics

Tonight we will be discussing WORLD WITHIN THE WORLD by at our monthly book club meeting over at at 7:30.

Over the last decade one of the first things I do at any small press convention is scan the list for Julia’s name and see if she has a new mini-comic. Her work has a particular sensitivity to violence that rips away whatever callous I thought I’ve built up, and always hits me in that sweet spot in between what we have words for. I like to think I can feel Julia’s hand getting carried away by her fine, deeply interconnected mark making as they pull her into the darker depths of her imagination. I like to imagine it’s a little scary for her to make these comics, just as it is for me to read them. But at the end of the day she pushes through and I’m so grateful she’s willing to share these comics with us.

FINALLY had the chance to visit in Philadelphia. I’m so impressed with the way they’ve become such an important cultural hub for the city in such a short amount of time. So bummed I missed Gina by a few minutes but Tom was such a great host and I have so much admiration for what their family has built.
