A note about Kwanzaa.
I love Kwanzaa. It’s been one of the few holidays that I feel connected to and that means a lot. There’s always a ton of confusion and trepidation about the holiday especially here in the conservative south. This is a hill I’m dying on.
Kwanzaa was started as one of the few celebrations that Afro-Americans built as their own. Each night (represented by candles) is lit with a different value in mind. The values include unity, purpose, and self-determination. The idea is that black folk must define their own culture and tradition. It is not a religious holiday and is open to all faiths— but this holiday is FUBU as so few things are- and I love the values the holiday stands for.
