🍁 Did you know that New York's state tree wasn't chosen by politicians, it was chosen by school kids?

Back in 1889, New York school children voted the sugar maple as their favorite tree. It took over 60 years, but it was officially named the state tree in 1956. Some things are worth the wait. 🌳

The same tree behind maple syrup and that stunning fall foliage has been a beloved part of New York's identity for over a century. Next time you spot one on your block, you're looking at a piece of history.

Spot a sugar maple near you? Tag us! And if you want a tree in front of your home, request a free street tree at www.buffalotrees.org 🍁🌳

β€œTrees represent life.”
That’s how a Buffalo Resident describes what trees mean to him. Years ago, a big black locust tree in his backyard came down, and instead of hauling it away, he turned it into boards. Today those boards are the hardwood floors in his home, a piece of that tree is still with him every day.

For him, trees aren’t just scenery. They give us oxygen, they give us shade, they give us a sense of place.

Every tree tells a story. Help write Buffalo’s next one

🌳 Myth Busting Monday!

"Street trees block my view and make my property less safe."

Actually, it's the opposite. Street trees calm traffic, create a natural buffer between roads and sidewalks, and bring more people outside β€” meaning more eyes on the street and less crime. Trees don't block safety β€” they build it.

Friday FAQ! 🌳 You submitted your tree request, now what?

Tree plantings in Buffalo take place during the spring and fall seasons. Once your request is received, the City will assess your site, schedule your tree, and send a crew out to plant it during the upcoming season.

Visit www.buffalotrees.org for tips on how to care for your new tree once it's planted.

🌳 Look what we grew together this summer.

In just 4 months, residents in our priority neighborhoods showed up big: 230+ tree requests, 50+ events, 1,500+ conversations, and 200+ new trees in the ground.

Every one of those trees is working for your block by filtering the air you breathe, cooling hot summer days, trimming energy bills, and lifting property values along the way.

The best part? Your street could be next. 🌱
