There’s a lot happening at Walk The Way, Inc. this week and I’m grateful for every step forward.

This week, I’m officially starting a new chapter in my own education as I begin working toward my second master’s degree, an MBA focused on nonprofit leadership and management. I believe in practicing what we teach: continuing to learn, grow, and become better equipped to serve our community.

We’re also gearing up for our Thursday Mentorship Class, continuing to create a space where youth and young adults can talk about real-life challenges, employment, financial literacy, personal growth, leadership, education, and the decisions that shape their future.

As Walk The Way continues to grow, so does the need for community support. We’re looking to connect with individuals, businesses, organizations, churches, community leaders, schools, and foundations who believe in investing in youth and young adults.

Sometimes support looks like a financial contribution. Sometimes it’s a connection, a job opportunity, a resource, a space, equipment, professional expertise, or simply introducing us to someone who needs to hear about what we’re doing.

If you know a person, business, organization, or funder that should know about Walk The Way, please connect us. And if you believe in the work, consider making a contribution to help us continue building programs and creating opportunities for the youth and young adults we serve.

We’re building something and we’re inviting the community to build it with us.

Today’s Mentorship Session: Real Conversations, Real Growth

This week in our Walk The Way, Inc. mentorship class, we focused on something that can make a major difference in the job search: what happens after you submit an application and after you walk out of an interview.

We talked about following up on applications, what to do after an interview, and understanding the difference between being given a specific timeline for follow-up versus being told no timeline at all. Knowing when to follow up and when to give an employer the space they asked for is an important part of professionalism and workforce readiness.

But as we’ve said from the beginning, our mentorship class is not about simply following a curriculum word-for-word.

We leave the floor open.

We want our young men to ask questions, challenge ideas, share experiences, and bring real-life situations into the room. Today, that conversation took us in a different direction and it created an opportunity for me, Brohdny, to share some of my own story.

I opened up about mistakes I made when I was younger, some of the trouble I got into, where my mind was at that point in my life, and how those experiences shaped the person I became.

Sometimes mentorship isn't about telling young people what not to do.

Sometimes it's about saying, “I've been there. I've made mistakes. Here's what I learned, and here's what I wish someone would have told me.”

Those honest conversations matter.

We are building a space where our young men can learn about employment and workforce development but also about life, choices, accountability, growth, and becoming the man you want to be.

The curriculum gives us a foundation.
The participants give us the conversation.

And today was another reminder of why that approach matters.

We were honored to welcome author Kevin Zephaniah as the first guest speaker in our Pathways to Success program at Walk The Way, Inc.

Rather than simply giving a presentation, Kevin created a conversation. He encouraged our young men to ask real questions about employment, the workplace, and life—and he tailored the discussion around what mattered most to them.

One of the biggest takeaways from the session was the importance of walking with dignity in order to command respect. Kevin reminded our participants that they are valued and capable of achieving great things. He also shared practical workplace skills such as the importance of a firm handshake, maintaining eye contact, communicating with confidence, and presenting yourself professionally.

These are the kinds of life and workforce development lessons that prepare young adults not only to get a job, but to build a successful future.

Thank you, Kevin Zephaniah, for investing your time, wisdom, and encouragement into the next generation. Your message left a lasting impact on our participants.

Today was another step forward for Walk The Way, Inc.

We had the opportunity to take five young men from our mentorship program to Northland Workforce Training Center for a pre-enrollment session and campus tour. They learned about the skilled trades, career pathways, educational opportunities, and SUNY partnerships available to help them build successful futures.

Moments like these remind us that mentorship is about more than encouragement it's about creating opportunities and connecting young adults with the resources they need to succeed.

We're grateful for our partnership with Northland Workforce Training Center and look forward to seeing these young men continue to grow as they pursue their GEDs, career training, and long-term goals.
