ISSUE Project Room is a pioneering performance center, presenting projects by both emerging and established experimental artists that expand the boundaries of artistic practice and stimulate critical dialogue about art and culture in the broader community. ISSUE plays a vital role in NYC’s cultural ecology, facilitating the commission and premiere of new works and presenting a diverse array of artists working across the disciplines of music, sound, dance, performance and literature. Programming places a special focus on bringing recognition to artists whose important contributions to the creative field have been underrecognized, often as a result of gender, sexuality, or geographic location. Through the cultivation of innovative new work, ISSUE performs an essential research and development function that stimulates a constant influx of ideas into the local, national, and international creative landscape.

Traversing post-romantic sturm und drang, minimalist overtone worship with phasing sequences, and heartfelt, voice-driven song, 2012 AIR Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix (Ravenna Rainer-Ray) continues an exploration of sound as psychedelic tapestry. With an eye towards black metal as a musical language as well as a cultural and philosophical form, this performance is an attempt, in Hunt-Hendrix’s words, to “call heaven down to earth.”

“Dissonant, wavering tones push forward, distorted and electric.
Buried deep within the interplay of timbres, an ancient chant slowly rises to the fore.
The liturgy clarifies as dense synthesizer harmonics dissipate, releasing pressure from the composition. Slowly, the sounds of chirping birds return, blending human and avian recitation.”
