Road trips used to look completely different.

There were no five-point safety harnesses or padded booster seats.

There was just the massive rear window ledge of a Plymouth Fury.

That flat, sun-baked space was the ultimate childhood VIP lounge.

You could lay back there with a comic book and a warm pillow.

You had a front-row seat to the open highway stretching out behind you.

Kids cruised at seventy-five miles per hour with zero structural protection.

A sudden brake meant becoming a flying human projectile.

But nobody cared about the laws of physics back then.

You were just soaking up the afternoon sun through that un-tinted glass.

Modern safety standards would definitely classify this as sheer madness.

But back then, it was just the absolute best seat in the house.

Back then, a great car stereo wasn’t just electronics.

It was status.

If your car had Pioneer speakers, an equalizer, and enough bass to rattle the license plate, you were basically royalty in the school parking lot.

People today will never understand how proud we were of removable faceplates, cassette decks, and spending three weekends wiring speakers we absolutely could not afford.

The 80s turned car audio into a full-blown personality trait.
