In the Northeast the common milkweed is flowering, but the monarch butterflies, which depend on the milkweed for their larvae, are hardly seen this year. With the western Monarch already near extinct, this is extremely worrying. The reason? Probably this year's weather. Insect numbers shift every year. Should that knowledge comfort us? Not really, since weather events like extreme rainfall and drought are becoming the new normal. We can all do our bit in our yards. And as an organization, that is our message. But what we really need, is a huge shift in awareness, and use our power as voters to embrace policies that protect our environment. Keep sharing messages like this with neighbors and friends.

In a month or two you’ll want to be harvesting your garden, not wishing you planted one....

So true! Luckily our Texas natives usually adapt quite well to our wonky weather!

Very good information!
Our birds and insects are evolutionary destined to feed on native species. With so many beautiful native plant species, why do we limit ourselves to these exotic and almost lifeless boxwoods and turf grasses? The lack of native species is starving our birds and our beneficial insects. Ready to switch? Here are two good plant finders: http://www.wildflower.org and https://www.nwf.org/NativePlantFinder Ask your nursery to provide those native species, or order them at one of the many online nurseries that provide native species. Commit yourself to planting 'food' for pollinators and birds this spring!

Step 1: Generate less trash.
As demand for recyclables plummets abroad, Texas lawmakers back plan to boost market at home A bill designed to encourage Texas manufacturers to use more recyclable materials won final approval Monday. It comes as China and India have implemented policies restricting the import of plastics and other materials.

Time to step up to the plate, TEXAS. Let’s get the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge signed in every county seat - then every city.

Climate change is playing havoc with Mexico’s monarch butterfly migration More than 95 percent of the species migrates each year to the same few hillsides in Central Mexico. Changing temperatures and weather are making their journey more precarious.
