Occasionally, there's just a super special client for whom there are no words adequate to explain how honored I feel to be at their birth. Eight years ago (!) we welcomed a new nanny to our family to care (mostly) for our kids. She was a beloved part of our family for over four years, and has continued to be a presence in Lily's life. She's loved my family through times of great joy and times of real struggle. She *knows* us, and loves us in spite of ourselves.

In February we had brunch together and she gave me a beautiful that I'd been coveting with a darling note inside that said "Be our doula?" Baby Atticus was on his way at the end of September!

And oh what fun we had enjoying pregnancy together! She took my childbirth class, we texted all the time, and loved on that growing belly.

And then one night, more than eight weeks too soon, I got a text that she was in labor. And we had to transfer from the community hospital she'd so carefully chosen to the bigger hospital with a higher level NICU.

And it was a labor like none I've ever been to. Our dear Kayla was so strong, and so brave, and so incredibly in control. And then she looked at me with big eyes and said "Something's different. I'm scared." And a few short moments later, this tiny little human joined the world, crying and wailing with beautiful color and strong tone. And he spent a brief moment on his mama's belly and then went off to the NICU with his dad.

This week, 40 days after his incredible, spectacular entrance to the world, I got to go snuggle Baby Atticus, and give my beautiful friend a hug and a few tears.

I truly, truly have the most incredible job.

Hi, my name is Shalini and I love abortion.
I generally avoid the term "prochoice". I’m not an “in cases of r**e and incest”. You won't hear me say “abortion is a necessary evil”.
I love abortion.
I love it in the same way I love epidurals, csections & home births.
I love it in the same way I love hearing a client say “I don’t want to breathe my baby out in the squatting position anymore. Get this baby out of me now!”
I love witnessing people make decisions that makes the most sense to them. I love trusting that they know themselves better than I ever could.

I don’t understand why we focus on when life begins. Conception? The third trimester? At birth?

In my opinion… who gives a s**t.

I have supported people choosing abortion & those choosing adoption. People experiencing the loss of a wanted pregnancy. I’ve supported home births & planned elective cesareans.

I’ve been in the room holding their hands during their abortion. I’ve worked with those as young as 9 years old and people in their 50s.
I’ve supported folks who chose abortion because of r**e and people who chose abortion because they “didn’t want to raise a girl”.
I’ve cried with them when they were told their much wanted pregnancy wasn’t viable at 35 weeks and I held their just passed baby as they called funeral homes.

I don’t understand any of this. I don’t understand why we can’t trust people to do what makes sense for them. I don’t understand the arrogance of thinking people aren’t experts on their bodies and their lives.

I don’t understand how this country can look us straight in the eye with its lack of free daycare and accessible mental health services. With its racism, food deserts, and high maternal + infant mortality rates. It looks us directly in the eye and overturns Roe v. Wade as if that’s the fu***ng issue.

Give us a better country. Give us a system where it’s not an excruciating pain in the ass to raise a child and give people faith they’re not going to die in childbirth due to structural racism. AND THEN TRUST US WITH OUR BODIES AND OUR LIVES.
