Today is a national holiday in Italy celebrated on June 2nd each year. It commemorates the day in 1946 when Italian citizens voted in a referendum to abolish the monarchy and establish Italy as a republic.

The holiday is celebrated throughout the country with various events, including parades, ceremonies, and picnics.

Pompeii is one of the must-sees in Italy for a reason: when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the bustling Roman city was quickly buried under ash and pumice, a tragedy from which most of the inhabitants did not escape. However, the ash preserved the city, providing us with an excellent snapshot of what Roman life was like at the time.
