For nearly three decades, passengers boarding a routine flight with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines sometimes had an unexpected co-pilot.
The man in the cockpit was the King of the Netherlands.
Willem-Alexander has now completed his final flight on the Boeing 737, closing an unusual chapter where a reigning monarch regularly flew commercial passengers across Europe.
The Dutch King began flying for KLM in 1996, quietly building hours alongside his royal duties. Passengers rarely knew who was flying the aircraft. He would simply introduce himself as the co-pilot.
Before the 737, he flew the Fokker 70 with KLM Cityhopper until the aircraft was retired in 2017.
Aviation will still remain part of his life. The King is now retraining on the Airbus A321neo as KLM gradually replaces its aging 737 fleet.
If he had not been born into royalty, the King once said he likely would have become a full-time airline pilot.
For nearly 30 years, he quietly lived that dream.
