This past Tuesday, September 8th, I had the privilege of being selected as an audience member for The The Oprah Podcast Oprah Podcast for a conversation about postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis stemming from the case.
Women shared their stories, doctors gave their perspectives, and journalists and audience members joined the conversation.
Those who know me know I am a huge advocate for health. As someone who knows someone who experienced postpartum psychosis, and as someone who has battled with my own mental health, my heart goes out to these women and their families.
Change happens when we normalize these conversations and take mental health, especially women’s mental health, seriously.
But I also want us to keep that same energy when the woman suffering doesn’t look like Lindsay. Black women experience maternal mental health challenges too, yet our pain can be overlooked, misunderstood or criminalized. Compassion cannot be selective. Who gets grace? Who gets believed? Whose mental illness is recognized before judgment?
I have battled severe depression a couple of times. In 2023, during one of the best AND worst years of my life, I woke up every day wishing I were dead.
So much of my life was everything I had prayed for. So why was I having passive suicidal thoughts?
Add ADHD, where thoughts, especially negative ones, can run through your mind like a hamster on a wheel. All day. Every day.
Mental health doesn’t always look like what we think it should. Someone can be smiling, working, achieving and showing up while fighting a battle inside their own mind.
Today, on World Su***de Prevention Day, I hold space for those who feel like life is a weight they cannot shake. Those contemplating su***de. Those who have attempted. Those we have lost. And those quietly fighting to stay.
We should not judge what we have never had to carry. Listen. Learn. Take people seriously. Extend compassion. And keep talking.

For Chris + Jamila, love was the foundation, and every detail rose to meet it. Soft ivory draping, sculptural florals, candlelight, and touches of olive created a celebration that felt elegant, full, and completely theirs.
Love on top, exactly where it belongs.

Who says centerpieces have to be only flowers or candles?
For the Empowering Women Award Ceremony at the we brought the table to life with fresh produce, drapery, fabric, and florals and brought the same textured drape throughout the space. Creative a cohesive, immersive environment.
Every layer was intentional, textural, abundant, and designed to make the experience feel as powerful as the women being honored.

Behind the FLAIR.
I mentor with Jamila , so designing this wedding for its founder was deeply meaningful. I wanted the G.R.O.W. Girls to learn what it really takes to produce an event, which is why I was doing so much of the hands-on work myself that I would typically pay staff to do.
They learned how to set tables, style and ruch linen, make design changes in real time, move trees, and understand the level of care behind a finished space.
Because as a founder, I believe it is important to know how to do the work you lead. You can outsource and build a team, but you should still understand the craft, the labor, and the decisions behind the standard you expect.
And 𝕊𝕪𝕕𝕟𝕖𝕪 𝕊𝕞𝕚𝕥𝕙 𝔻𝕖𝕤𝕚𝕘𝕟 our florist, truly went above and beyond. I did not want these tree to look like anything we had done before, so she created her own, yes, she was really in the forest collecting bark (check out my story for the close-up of the bark) 😉
That is the part people do not always see. The physical work. The two-day install. The problem-solving. The creativity. The care behind every detail.
The final reveal is beautiful, but the production is where the magic is made.
The beauty is always in the details, but the details only look effortless because there is so much happening behind the scenes.
Fixing candles, problem-solving on the phone, reviewing the room, and apparently making sure linen is steamed five more times because, in Adrian’s words, “you’re a psycho.” 😂 She was joking… but she also knows how seriously I take every element of an experience.
What made this wedding production day especially meaningful was having my Jamila Girls beside me. They learned how to fold napkins, ruche and steam, follow a floor plan, set a table, and understand the level of organization, care, and teamwork it takes to bring a room to life.
They were truly some of the best help I have had, and brought so much joy to the day.
I cannot wait to help them design and execute their very own Summit this fall.
