Happy to be back in Indiana working with the again in the beautiful Palladium. Concert on Saturday has the theme of Nordic Nights and features Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 and Karelia Suite, as well as my friend doing double duty as concertmaster and soloist in Thomas Adès’ gorgeous Air: Homage to Sibelius.

And that’s a wrap on my month working and playing in Arizona. I had the best time with my wonderful colleagues on stage, in the pit, and behind the scenes of this memorable production. Sad to leave, but looking forward to being home for a few days!

After an exciting final dress rehearsal of Madama Butterfly for 1000 excited kids (most seeing an opera for the first time), and I made it just in time to see the golden hour at Hopi Point. We are so lucky to experience such beauty today!

One of the special things about this meaningful production of Madama Butterfly at is the ceremonial metal bowl that is a family heirloom donated to this production by our Japanese culture consultant, Asuka Morinaga. It is even actually pitched A as Puccini wrote in his score!

It’s rare that conductor’s cross paths in all but the major metropolitan cities, so it was fun spending a little time with (who wonderfully led the Phoenix Symphony in concert) and (en route from CA to lead El Paso’s Bohème) during my first week of rehearsals with Arizona Opera.
