“Tuck Your Toes In” is another cue. The cue is helping you, physically and mentally, remember to control and stabilize the bike with your lower body instead of trying to hold everything together with your arms.

I’m in shoes because it’s easier to see the movement pattern. Riding boots allow us a better connection to the bike.

Intentionally practice tucking your toes in while riding and see what you feel. Riders are very dynamic on the bike, so tucking your toes in won’t keep them there. The movement pattern should be driving you back toward a “tucked in” foot position as you stabilize your feet on the pegs.

In a sport where throwing your helmet and kicking your bike is tolerated, if not celebrated, I guess it isn’t surprising that Hunter Lawrence’s emotional maturity shocks viewers.

There are only so many hours in a day, week, month and year. Use them wisely if you’re looking to be faster and safer on the motorcycle. One hour, three days a week can easily compound to more capacity on the bike.

Thanks again to Ben Greenwood • Offroad Coach for the August episode of the podcast. It’s available on all podcasting platforms.

Who do you think is next?

Mitch Payton had wise words to Steve Matthes when they discussed the Levi Kitchen Moto One penalty. He’s not happy about it, but he understands it. What did you think? Always love the post-race interviews. Enjoy 🤘🏻🤙🏻⚡️

The “Sport Specific Fluff” topic w/ Ben Greenwood • Offroad Coach and Matt Giroux’s recent ClubMX reel really got me motivated to dig in more. The big word of the day is ‘proprioception’, easily understood as body awareness. Do you know where your body is in space? The goal of ‘balance training’ is to improve how well your body senses that information, and how quickly and effectively you can respond to it.

That’s where the balance board and BOSU balls don’t directly translate to ‘on the bike’. Using those objects gets you good at sensing the object moving underneath your feet and adjusting. Your eyes are not part of the equation as much as they are on the bike.

The split stance scoop toss Matt showed gives the eyes a job, keep track of the ball so you can catch it. As you catch the ball, your lower body has to absorb the impact, stabilize, and keep you upright. The motion is connected, but the eyes and body have different jobs, just like they do on the bike.

When we’re taking in objects ahead on the track or the trail, the bike is moving and reacting underneath us. We need our eyes to process what is coming, while our body feels what is happening. That’s why a Balance Board or BOSU ball doesn’t directly translate to riding.

Use them if you enjoy them, they can help with general balance and ankle stability. They just shouldn’t be the ‘go to movement’ for transferable bike balance.
