Emerald Lops Rabbitry

Hey, guys! Just like I promised, I will be breeding this fall. I will post when I am expecting, but for now, congrats to Cosmo for getting BOV and BOB at the Western Idaho Fair!

It is Oriana's special day! I am hoping to see some babies in the nestbox tomorrow morning!

Look who arrived all the way from Kira Moehlmann in Oregon! This is LLL Oriana, and we are so excited to introduce her as our new mama. We have some big plans coming up shortly!

Hey! We have a breeding planned for February, hopefully we'll have some kits available in April!

Welcome Sugden's Cosmo! I'm going to take some better pictures once he finishes his molt. We will be taking him to the show at Western Idaho Fair in 2 weeks, and I think he'll do well!

EDIT: He got BOB! I'm very excited to see how his future babies do!

I have no litters planned for the rest of the year. But I do hope to get some in the spring. Please check back then. We'll be excited to see you!

Make sure to keep your bunnies cool this summer! Shade, frozen water bottles, and take them indoors if necessary! I just lost my 9 week frosty doe!

Yep.
While doing my weekly clean up of the bedding and the p**p, I decided to look into selling the stuff like I know some breeders like to do, since there's SO MUCH of it every week.
Turns out, rabbit p**p is like gold in the gardening world. I had a vague idea when my first rabbit made a large 5ft spot of luscious, emerald green grass in the middle of our yard.
But I didn't exactly know why.
Turns out, rabbit p**p is one of the best fertilizers out there (dare I say the best?), ESPECIALLY in the desert when all the soil is good for is for growing sagebrush. Here are several reasons why:
1. It contains phosphorus, nitrogen, two main minerals that plants NEED, but most soils don't provide.
2. It contains SEVERAL other beneficial minerals.
3. It does not require composting like horse, cow, pig, or chicken fertilizer, since it does not "burn" the roots like most manures do.
4. It is easy to handle and spread in its pellet form
5. It improves the structure of poor soil
6. Worms love it
7. It does not smell
8. Helps moisture retention in poor soil
9. It contains 4x more nutrients than horse or cow p**p
10. It is 2x richer than chicken p**p.
With that, it might explain why the price might be so high. Local gardening stores will sell these pellets for $15 or more (if they even have it).

So...
I have good new and bad news.
Lassy gave birth to a stillborn on the Tuesday after the grand discovery of more bunnies. I had to pull it out. This morning she gave birth, but it was cut open and bleeding and I had to take Lassy in because I couldn't pull it out.
I will spare the gruesome details.
They took x-rays of her, and it turns out, Lassy has an extremely rare condition called inertia dystocia. Her muscles couldn't shove the baby out properly, which was why they were all stuck. Her uterus was also literally falling out and the baby's head was stuck i the fold.
On TOP of that, there was ANOTHER baby in there.
The vet gave her shots to help her induce, but if that didn't work, we'd have to do emergency surgery or put Lassy down. :(
Luckily, Lassy made it through and is now OK.
I will be giving her antibiotics and making sure that she heals fine.
She will be retiring as a mother and will now be the mascot of Emerald Lops Rabbitry from now on. :)

Good news!
After finding Lassy in her cage with some blood and a larger nest, I palpated and got a second opinion from Lillys Lops. We found that she has at LEAST 2 more babies on the way, and at least one of them is for sure alive!
I'll keep checking in on the maybe-momma-to-be and hopefully we'll find some babies in the nest tonight!
