I hate to say it, but we have a problem. What’s almost worse than the problem itself is the proposed “solutions” flooding this space that don’t meet Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) criteria. We spend so much energy bad-mouthing those quick fixes, but what if we turned that focus inward instead? Too many SLPs approach AAC strictly from a linguistic perspective. We’ve been told that implementation starts with “modeling without expectations,” right? Wrong. We’ve been sold a narrative that simply doesn’t work in reality. It’s time for a hard stop and a real shift in practice: AAC implementation starts with ACCESS. Before language comes motor and visual access. Reframing our approach around this foundation changes everything, especially for users with complex physical and sensory profiles. Visual Access: Focus on building visual attention first. Motor Access: Focus on the mechanics of selection. Intentional or not, access comes first. When you establish the right access supports, an entirely new world opens up for the communicator in front of you.
