In September 1968, the Whisky A Go-Go lit up with something special. From the 18th to the 22nd, the world was introduced to the Buddy Miles Express. This wasn’t just another debut—it turned into a magnet for legends. Jimi Hendrix, Eric Burdon, and Graham Bond all dropped in, and the jams were as wild as you’d imagine. At one point Mitch Mitchell even slid behind Buddy’s drums while Buddy grabbed a guitar.

And how can you NOT love the photo of Jimi clapping for Buddy as the Express was being introduced!

At that time Jim McCarty—who would later make his mark with Cactus—hadn’t joined yet, so Hoshal Wright most likely carried the lead guitar role. The Express itself rose from the ashes of the Electric Flag. Mike Bloomfield had bowed out in June, Hoshal stepped in, and then Nick Gravenites and Harvey Brooks left a month later. That left Buddy in charge, front and center on drums and vocals, shaping the band into his own vision.

A key new addition was bassist Billy Rich, brother of organist Herbie Rich. Billy had already built a name in the Oakland R&B scene with The Whispers, and he brought a deep pocket to the group’s sound.

What made the Buddy Miles Express unique was its blend of soul, rock, and horns—and the fact that so many of its members shared the same roots. Buddy, Herbie, Billy, and Hoshal all came from Omaha, Nebraska. From a Midwestern hometown to the heart of the Sunset Strip, they carved out something that still feels timeless.
