That doesn’t make college or university the wrong choice. But it does mean the old “college or bust” narrative leaves out a major path: skilled trades, where you can earn while you learn and continue building your income over time.

Here’s what the data shows in the U.S. and Canada:
• Skilled trades: roughly US$56,000–US$64,000 at national median pay in the U.S.; roughly C$71,000–C$73,000 in Canada for comparable trades.
• Bachelor’s degree: about US$82,000 annually for full-time U.S. workers age 25+; about C$92,900 annually in Canada for workers age 25+ with a bachelor’s degree or higher.
• Higher earning potential: In the U.S., the top 10% of electricians and plumbers earn more than US$108,000 annually, while the top 10% of flooring installers and tile and stone setters earn more than US$89,000. In Canada, published high wage estimates annualize to about C$96,000–C$108,000 for plumbers, electricians, and industrial mechanics—before overtime.

The trades also offer multiple paths to increase income over time: specialization, overtime, leadership roles, and starting or growing your own business.

In tile installation, higher pay often comes down to market factors:
• Low supply of skilled workers with high demand
• Availability of overtime, weekend, or night shifts
• Project-based pay structures rather than fixed salaries
• Hazard pay or compensation for physically demanding work
• Opportunities for bonuses tied to speed, efficiency, or specialization

At the end of the day, it’s not “school vs. trades.” It’s about choosing the path that matches your goals, skills, and lifestyle.
