Pool Tip Tuesday: Picking the Right Pump Size

Bigger isn't always better! An oversized pump wastes energy — an undersized one won't filter your water properly.

Quick rule: your pump should turn over your ENTIRE pool's water every 8 hours.

Simple fórmula:
Pool gallons ÷ 8 hours = gallons per hour (GPH) you need

Heavy rain can dilute chlorine, stabilizer, salt, and other important chemicals. Storms also carry leaves, dirt, fertilizer, and other contaminants into the water. Combined with Florida’s warm temperatures, this can quickly create the perfect conditions for algae.

After a storm, remove debris, empty the baskets, run the filtration system, and test the water before adding chemicals.

A lot of people think a salt pool is “chlorine-free,” but that’s not really true.

A salt pool is still a chlorine pool.

The difference is how the chlorine gets into the water:

A traditional chlorine pool has chlorine added manually.
A salt pool uses a salt chlorine generator to convert salt in the water into chlorine.

That’s basically it.

Both pools still need proper pH, alkalinity, stabilizer, calcium and chlorine levels to stay clean, safe and protect the pool surface and equipment.

Salt systems can make chlorine production more automatic and consistent, but they do not eliminate chlorine or regular pool maintenance.

What Are Those Little White “Volcanoes” on Your Pool Surface?

They’re called "calcium nodules", and they are often misunderstood.

Unlike normal calcium scale that forms on top of the pool surface because of water chemistry, calcium nodules usually begin **behind the plaster**.

Small cracks, pinholes, hollow areas, or separation between the plaster and the pool shell can allow pool water to get underneath the finish. Once water reaches that area, it creates a calcium-rich environment behind the plaster.

That calcium-rich water slowly finds its way back through the tiny crack or pinhole. When it reaches the pool water, a chemical reaction occurs and **calcium carbonate begins to build up around that opening**.

Over time, it creates those small, hard, white spots that sometimes look like tiny **volcanoes** growing out of the pool surface.

Important: Calcium nodules are not automatically a sign of poor weekly pool service or bad chemical maintenance.

In many cases, the underlying cause is related to the pool surface itself — such as:

• Poor bonding between plaster and the pool shell
• Delamination or hollow areas behind the plaster
• Hairline cracks or pinholes
• Improper plaster preparation or application
• Movement or aging of the pool structure

Sometimes these problems don't appear until **many years after the pool was built or resurfaced.

Maintaining properly balanced water is extremely important for protecting your pool, but when true calcium nodules appear, simply adjusting the chemicals usually won't fix the underlying problem.

Understanding where the calcium is coming from is the first step toward determining the correct repair.

Many potting soils contain fertilizers, minerals, and metals. During heavy rain—especially here in Florida—the planter can overflow, allowing fertilizer-rich water to run directly into the pool.

Those metals can settle on the pool surface and create brown, yellow, or rust-colored stains that are very difficult to remove.

In some cases, a specialized metal-removal treatment can correct the problem. More severe staining may require draining the pool and performing an acid wash.

Keep planters far enough away from the pool so rainwater and drainage cannot enter the water.

A small change in landscaping can prevent a very expensive pool repair.
