When people stop saying my child’s name, it hurts in a way that is hard to explain. Some people may avoid their name because they do not want to make me sad, but the truth is, I am already missing them. I already know they are gone. Saying their name does not remind me of the loss. It reminds me that they lived, that they mattered, and that their love is still part of this world. A grieving mother is not trying to forget her child. She is trying to survive with a love that still needs somewhere to go. Sometimes hearing their name is not painful because it brings them back up. It is comforting because it lets me know someone else remembers too.
