What does “Nueve Puntos” (nine points) mean? There are no lyrics to provide any clues.
It was composed by Francisco Canaro in 1920 Shortly after the introduction of electric street cars (tranvia) in the streets of Buenos Aires for public transportation. The tranvia used to have nine speeds that the operator set with a lever. The phrase became an idiom for "Full speed ahead” and was the maximum speed that the old Buenos Aires tram could reach. When someone was at its best performance they were said to be at it’s nine points "A sus nueve puntos".

The figure of Francisco Canaro dominated tango music from 1916 to 1935. Perhaps the most prolific and popular tango artist ever, his discography weighs in at over 3800 entries. Canaro accomplished so much because he was disciplined and innovative and had a gift to understand what would be popular. Born into poverty, he fought his way to success and wealth with his dedicationunequalled work ethic.
