Pierre, a 54-year-old chimpanzee at Chimp Haven in Louisiana, regained functional vision after becoming completely blind from cataracts.
Veterinary teams spent months preparing Pierre for surgery and post-operative care, including teaching him to voluntarily present his eyes for examinations and eyedrops.
Within hours of the operation, Pierre was responding visually to a caregiver he had known for decades, and within days he was reconnecting with other chimpanzees.
It was the first cataract surgery performed on a resident at Chimp Haven.

#TildaSwinton’s imagination is untethered—that much is true, and has been a defining quality in her craft and the projects she has undertaken across her storied career. This is no different for her next endeavour, as the face of @Cartier’s Into the Wild collection—and her first campaign as the Parisian jeweller’s global ambassador. “[The jewels] feel wonderfully alive, as though each has stepped into the world carrying its own story and eager to share it,” shares Swinton. “This encounter with the savage wilderness is a wholly benign one, a child’s dream of the far horizon, exotic though it might be, and of harmony and companionable friendship between all.” Read the exclusive interview now, at the link in bio. #VogueSingapore

Your pupil is just a hole. It's the opening in your iris that lets light in, and it looks black because your eye absorbs that light rather than reflecting it back out. The iris opens and closes automatically, letting in more light in the dark and less in the sun. Simple enough. Except nature didn't settle on one design. Scientists compared pupils across hundreds of species and found something neat: the shape isn't random. It matches how the animal lives. Prey animals get wide pupils. A sheep or a horse can scan almost the full horizon without turning its head, which means it spots the threat and knows exactly where to run. Predators get pupils that open far wider. More light means hunting works at dusk, at midnight, in the sun. It also means they can judge exactly how far away dinner is without moving their head and giving themselves away. But here's the part that got me. The horizontal pupils of sheep, goats and horses rotate. When the animal lowers its head to graze, the eyes turn in their sockets to keep the pupils level with the ground. It's called cyclovergence, and it happens without the animal thinking about it. The head moves. The view stays steady. So the moment something moves in the grass, they're already looking at it. Swipe through for seven pupil shapes and what each one is actually for 👁 Which one surprised you most?
