Sanders Store

Our chapter presented three Excellence in Historic Preservation medals tonight to Whippoorwill Hill, VET Environmental Engineering, LLC., and Sanders Store. Rudy & Kay Fields accepted the awards on behalf of their Sanders Store building as well as their daughters’ businesses. We were happy to recognize how they’ve each restored and repurposed barns and buildings from different eras in Bloomington.

The DAR’s Excellence in Historic Preservation award recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations that promote historic preservation in myriad ways. The recognition honors individuals and groups that have saved and/or preserved their local history, including restoration of buildings, collections, significant objects, monuments, cemeteries, and other important artifacts. It may be presented to a group or business that rescues a historic structure to establish it as its headquarters.

One of the best things about restoring historic places is getting little hints into what the place was before time took its toll, before businesses closed down, when it was bustling, when it was someone’s home, before you reimagined it into something new and put your mark on it.

What’s really fun is when the community around you is in support of the restoration and they help find all the relics, nick-nacks, whosambobs, and bona fire treasures that once called your project home.

That’s exactly how this beauty found her way home.

In 1969 the Sanders Store (the Hays Grocery) closed up shop. From the way I understand it, this butcher block was removed from the Store and was locally stored until it came up for sale at a local antique shop last year. A friend found this & made the connection to our beloved Sanders Store. Obviously, we couldn’t resist.

While we don’t cut a lot of meat here anymore, it makes one hell of a cool bed side table.

They’re back! Completely restored!
