At the request of our law enforcement partners in Shelby County, Texas, we are again asking for our public's assistance in locating the below pictured individual. We have attached the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Facebook post below. He is believed to be driving the below pictured vehicle that was seen in Blairsville earlier this evening traveling eastbound on Hwy 515 W toward downtown Blairsville. He might be traveling with a white female with dark hair. He is also believed to have shaved his hair into more of a buzz cut. If you believe that you know where Therrin or this truck is located, please DO NOT APPROACH. Call 911 immediately.

Rubber Duck Derby tickets to benefit Blairsville Police Department's Shop with a Cop are now on sale!

The Rubber Duck Derby is coming back to Blairsville on September 2, 2023 on Butternut Creek next to the Union County Farmer's Market. Ducks can be adopted for $10 each. Each duck has a number on the bottom that will be provided to you when you adopt your duck. The first three ducks to cross the finish line will win $500, $250, and $100 respectively. There are dozens of other prizes that will be given away after the first three ducks have won. Also, there is a "lame duck" prize, which is a gas grill donated by The Home Depot of Blairsville, which will be awarded to the final duck that crosses the finish line.

If you would like to adopt a duck, you can speak with any Blairsville Police Officer, come by the Police Department at 96 Blue Ridge St, or call the after-hours non-emergency number at (706) 439-6038.

Remember, ALL (not some, not most) proceeds will benefit the Police Department's Shop with a Cop program to help children in need during Christmas. Last year, we were able to take 150 children shopping for Christmas because of the generosity of our community. We are extremely grateful for that and we hope to take just as many children (if not more) this year!

Happy 4th of July to all! As this holiday approaches, the most common question we get is in regards to fireworks during the holidays. We want everyone to enjoy their holiday weekend and be safe, but please also be courteous to your neighbors when enjoying your fireworks displays.

This is the law concerning fireworks in Georgia. Hopefully, it clears up any confusion. The Blairsville Police Dept. wishes you and your family a Happy and Safe 4th of July weekend!!!

OCGA 25-10-2
Prohibited Fireworks Activities
Georgia's fireworks laws. Please be courteous to your neighbors!

• Fireworks can be used throughout the year from 10:00AM-11:59 PM, unless it is in violation of a local noise ordinance. City limits of Blairsville DOES have a noise ordinance which limits loud, unnecessary, or unusual sound and is audible to a person of normal hearing more than 50 ft from the origin of the sound.

• On July 3rd and July 4th fireworks may be used until midnight (regardless of local ordinance)

• Fireworks may not be used at a park, within 100 yards of a nursing home, hospital, electric plant, water plant, or gas station.

The Blairsville Police Department would like to wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year's!

This time of year, our dispatchers are inundated with phone calls about fireworks. With that, we would like to let everyone know what the law says about shooting fireworks during the holiday season.

On New Year's Eve, fireworks can be used beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday until 1 a.m. on Sunday morning. On Sunday (New Year's Day), fireworks can be used beginning at 10 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.

Fireworks cannot be be ignited:
- Within 100 yards of an electric plant, water (or waste-water) treatment plant, gas station, refinery, electric substation, jail/prison, public use air facility, hospital, nursing home, or other health care facility
- Within any park, historic site, recreational area, or other property owned or operated by any governing authority
- By anyone while under the influence of alcohol or drugs

We hope that everyone has a great New Year's. If you are going to be celebrating this weekend, then please do so responsibly and safely!

Traffic Law Reminder!

Earlier tonight there was an incident that caused temporary power outage to parts of the city. Unfortunately, this power outage also affected the traffic lights on Hwy 515 E at the intersection with Home Depot. Luckily this was only temporary and there were no accidents that occurred. However, we would like to give everyone a friendly reminder of what Georgia law states as it pertains to this type of incident.

O.C.G.A. 40-6-70 states "When two vehicles approach or enter an intersection with a traffic light in unactivated dark mode, the driver of each vehicle shall be required to stop in the same manner as if a stop sign were facing in each direction at the intersection."

Therefore, if you see a traffic light that is not operational, please navigate the intersection as you would if you were facing a stop sign, so as to avoid any accidents with other vehicles also utilizing the intersection.

We received a good dusting of snow overnight. It was just enough to make the roads icy and slick. The Road Department and DOT are doing a great job of trying to salt the roads, but some of the secondary roads are going to be slick. If you can wait a little later into the morning before getting out, that will allow extra time for the temperature to heat up (some) and help melt some of this. If you have to get out this morning, give yourself a little extra time and be careful.

12/24/2022

Just FYI from Blue Ridge Mountain EMC. Everyone stay safe and warm! A big thank you to our EMC crews and others that are braving the elements today for us!

12/23/2022

Freeze Warning

There are icy spots on the roadways throughout the County. Not much snow came in last night, but we did get some rain that has now began freezing on the roadways. Use extreme caution if you must travel this morning. Allow yourself some extra time.

Rubber Duck Derby Tomorrow!

The 4th Annual Blairsville Police Department's Rubber Duck Derby supporting Shop with a Cop takes place tomorrow at 11 a.m. The Rubber Duck Derby begins and ends at the Union County Farmer's Market. The rubber ducks will enter Butternut Creek upstream closer to the dog park area of the farmer's market. The finish line will be located downstream just past the covered bridge. This is always a fun time watching and rooting for your duck to win! We want to thank all of our local businesses and partners that have donated prizes. We also want to thank everyone who adopted a rubber duck. ALL of the money raised from this fundraiser goes to Shop with a Cop, so we cannot thank everyone enough! We hope to see you tomorrow!

08/22/2022

The truck and trailer that we were looking for the other day has been located. Thank you to everyone who assisted by keeping a lookout. We are blessed to live in a community where we can have such a great partnership!

Our ducks are slowly floating away!

The 4th Annual Rubber Duck Derby ticket sales are under way! We have began selling ducks for our annual duck derby and have already sold close to half of our ducks! For those that are not familiar, the Blairsville Police Department hosts an annual duck derby to raise money for our Shop with a Cop program. The annual Shop with a Cop event has taken thousands of children Christmas shopping over the last two decades. We anticipate taking over 100 children again this year; however, we can only do it with YOUR help!

Each duck costs $10 to adopt. How does it work you ask? Each duck has a number on the bottom of it. When you adopt your duck, you receive a number assigned to you from the bottom of that duck. On September 3, 2022 at 11AM, we will release all of the ducks into Butternut Creek at the Union County Farmer's Market. As the ducks cross the finish line, we will determine who the winners of the race are!

Prizes: 1st place - $500, 2nd place - $250, 3rd place - $100. There will be more prizes given out. Last year we gave away over 80 prizes to the winners (the first 80 ducks to cross the finish line)! You do not have to be present to win.

How do I adopt a duck?

You can get a duck ticket from any Blairsville Police officer. Alternatively, you can contact the Blairsville Police Department at (706) 835-1692 or come by the office at 96 Blue Ridge St anytime M-F from 8:00a-4:30p. We can accept cash or check.

Remember, ALL PROCEEDS from this rubber duck derby will benefit the Blairsville Police Department Shop with a Cop. We hope that you will consider adopting a duck, and we hope that you will join us for the duck derby on September 3rd!
