I usually try to only publish items specifically and narrowly related to our mission of supporting the families of the men and women in the Massachusetts National Guard.

Today I am writing on a topic more broadly related to our mission - the social fabric of our nation.

My friend John Kingston has written a very important piece on this and I encourage you to read it (whatever your politics).

Most of you will not know this, but John and his Sword and Spoon foundation partnered with me in launching Guard Support, for which I am eternally grateful.

As a result of sequestration, the automatic spending cuts that began March 1, more than 900 civilian employees who support the Massachusetts Guard’s mission must take 11 unpaid furlough days between now and September in a cost-cutting measure.

We understand that the cuts do not affect active-duty guardsmen, but they of course impact the civilian men and women who support the mission (and their families).
