A progressive, welcoming congregation located near the UC Berkeley campus that serves the entire East Bay. First Church Berkeley. So many syllables! or FCCB.
AKA First Congregational Church of Berkeley, CA, United Church of Christ. First Church for short. Or Home. We are people who may have been brought up in other faith traditions or none at all. We are people of different ages and styles of life. We are people of different races, including multi-racial families. Our families are different shapes and sizes and include singles, significant others, and those who have lost partners or spouses. Some of us have children, some of us don’t, some of us are children. We respect other faith traditions, and some of our families are interfaith. We are all over the map politically (but we are located in Berkeley!). We are free to wrestle theologically. We take care of each other. We like to think and exchange ideas and opinions. We value creativity and use the arts in many ways in the life of the church.

This week is full of hard news. For survivors of sexual violence, whether recent or long ago, the news this week may be stirring up a lot of painful memories. We want you to know that we stand with you. You are beloved, you are whole, you are precious in God's sight and in ours. Nothing that happened to you could ever change that.
We also know that church may be the very place where your memories are closest to the surface. Churches should be places of safety, sanctuaries where children and vulnerable people of all kinds can come and find refuge, warmth, community. Instead, churches have too often protected the powerful, hidden the truth, questioned survivors, or urged forgiveness without accountability. Nothing is more important than the people we are called to love, and we lament and repent of the times we have fallen short of our duty to love and protect.
So today we offer this prayer:
God who holds the wounded,
God who protects the vulnerable,
God who hears our cries,
Be near to all who carry the pain of sexual violence. Surround them with open-hearted listeners who support their healing and respect their boundaries, who meet them at their silence, their grief, their rage, their need, and their hope.
Grant courage to your church today as we recommit to the work of confronting abuse. Grant us new vision, that we might see where we have failed to protect, where we have buried truth in the name of maintaining our status.
Teach us to pray with our voices, our hands, our votes today and every day, that not one more person would carry this pain in the future.
And may every survivor know, all the way down to their bones, that they are worthy of every good thing. That safety is their birthright, tenderness their home, justice their pathway, and love their inheritance, now and forevermore.
