Apprentices also help produce content for KPFA and must commit to one 3 hour shift on either Monday, Thursday or Friday.
First Voice Media is an apprenticeship program at KPFA 94.1 FM where apprentices receive training in radio journalism, professional broadcasting, line production, media making and much more. This intensive program spans from 15 to 18 months and apprentices take classes from 7 to 9:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursday taught by skilled broadcasters, sound engineers, social media experts and activists. Hey First Voice friends and followers. Yesterday we walked with the family of Yolanda Ramirez on what would have been her 73rd birthday. Many of you will remember that Yolanda died after a troubling encounter with Brentwood police of Contra Costa County.
On Yolanda's birthday, the small group of family and friends walked between family homes on the same route Yolanda has taken thousands of times. When they arrived at the sisters home, where Yolanda was assaulted by police. They sang happy birthday and left a memorial candle and some gifts for their Uncle who they haven't seen since the deadly encounter.
The small group continued to walk 2 more miles to the Brentwood Police department when Rich, Yolanda's son and Rudy her husband thanked the folks for walking with them and shared a couple memories of Yolanda.
