Maracatu Pacífico
Dedicated to studying and performing the music of Maracatu de Baque Virado of Pernambuco, Brazil.
Maracatu Pacifico is a percussion group dedicated to studying and performing the rhythms and songs of Maracatu de Baque Virado of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. We play both traditional maracatu Nação (our main influence is Estrela Brilhante do Recife) and the Bate Livre style of Maracatu Badia of Olinda. Our rehearsals are by invitation only, but everyone is always welcome to come and listen!
Rehearsal ended in this satisfying note, tu-maracatu!
We got together for a maracatu singing workshop with Jeremy Parker 🎤 so much gratitude for Jeremy’s teaching and for everyone sharing their beautiful voices in community!
What is Maracatu?
Hear from our very own —an inspiring musician rooted in Pernambuco, Brazil, and a valued member of the community. Paulo shares the history, spirit, and deeper meaning behind the rhythms that guide our work. 🥁✨
We’re grateful to learn, play, and grow together through voices like his.

From : “Zumbi Festival is a community gathering of Black Consciousness, the power of community honoring Zumbi dos Palmares and all the leaders that unify and empower our community in the Bay Area. Zumbi dos Palmares was born free in the Palmares region of Brazil in the year 1655, the last of the military leaders of the Quilombo (Kimbundu word: "kilombo," of the North Mbundu Bantu language in Angola, meaning "warrior village or settlement") of Palmares. The Quilombo dos Palmares was a free society (free-born, maroons, or refugee slave), an old South American republic, which included the present-day Brazilian coastal state of Alagoas, Brazil. Today, Zumbi is known as one of the great historical leaders of Brazil. The event will highlight local artists and small business.”
Maracatu Pacífico is proud to be presenting some songs and rhythms from the maracatu naçãoes in Pernambuco, Brazil.
