It is with sad and heavy hearts that the Berkeley Fire Department announces it lost one of its former Fire Chiefs. Mr. Howard Augustus O'Guin was born on July 8th, 1935 in Clayton, Missouri and passed away on Friday, August 28th, 2026, at the age of 91. Howard graduated from Kinloch High School in 1953 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955. Following his military service, Howard began his career as a firefighter with the Kinloch Fire Protection District and advanced to the position of Deputy Chief. In 1966 Howard joined the Berkeley Fire Department and then graduated from Forest Park College in 1973 with a background in Fire Protection Technology. Known for his exceptional courage, he once received severe burns during a rescue attempt and was later awarded the prestigious Award of Honor for his acts of heroism. Howard became the first African American Fire Chief for the City of Berkeley in 1990 and also served as the Director of Fire and Rescue Services. In 1992 Chief O'Guin retired from the Berkeley Fire Department after 25 years of service. The St. Louis Fire Academy lists Chief Howard as an Honoree with its 39th graduation class.

Memorial Services will be held at the Berkeley Civic Center on September 15, 2026 at 2:30pm.

The Berkeley Fire Department wishes everyone a Happy Labor Day. We observe this holiday to honor the American workers who helped change the way our country views its workforce, allowing for economic freedom and liberty. 🇺🇸

Congratulations to B Shift for a Clinical Save award involving one of our residents! On June 27, 2026, the crews of 3617 and 3614 responded to a 911 call for a seizure that turned into a cardiac arrest. The crews worked quickly to perform critical life saving treatments on scene and transport. The crew was able to restore a pulse and get the patient to the emergency department. The patient was stabilized and then moved to the ICU. Great job to all team members!
