Dance Monks

I first met Simone Forti when I was 16 years old while dancing with the intergenerational women's dance company, Working Ground. I had joined the company at 14, and our eldest member was in her 80s.

Simone led us in a site-specific workshop where we explored being moved by what lies beneath the earth—including worms, for which she had a great fondness. It was such a memorable introduction to her way of seeing and moving through the world.

Her work was presented around the globe, and she became known for her groundbreaking movement installations in museums—living works that could later be acquired as artworks and performed again in the future.

She was a brilliant artist whose curiosity and imagination changed the field of dance and performance. She will be deeply missed.

Estimados maestros de danza, estudios, y practicantes del movimiento de San Miguel de Allende:

Somos los Directores y Cofundadores de DANCE MONKS, una compañía con trayectoria internacional y sede en San Miguel de Allende y el Área de la Bahía de San Francisco.

Los invitamos a unirse a nosotros para lanzar una Semana de la Danza en San Miguel de Allende. Nuestra intención es fomentar el interés por la danza y el movimiento, fortalecer nuestra comunidad local y apoyarnos mutuamente como artistas y docentes.

Del 26 de abril al 3 de mayo de 2027, invitamos a los maestros locales a ofrecer una clase GRATUITA y abierta al público. La oferta de una clase gratuita durante esta semana es un requisito para formar parte del programa oficial del evento.

Para participar, solo tienen que completar el formulario abajo con su interés y los detalles de su clase. Las clases pueden realizarse en su estudio habitual, parque, centro comunitario o cualquier otro espacio donde enseñen.

Invitamos a maestros y practicantes de movimiento de todas las disciplinas y niveles de experiencia a participar, incluyendo, entre otros: danza aérea, danza creativo para niños, Afro, tango, performance en espacios específicos, butoh, danza contemporánea, parkour, breakdance, belly dancing, ballet, flamenco, artes marciales, heels, danza extática, contact improvisation, zapateado, folclórica y otras formas conocidas y por conocerse.

Ya sea que tengas muchos años de experiencia enseñando o que apenas estés comenzando a compartir tu práctica, tu participación será bienvenida. También los animamos a promover el evento, asistir y apoyar las clases de los demás mientras fortalecemos juntos nuestra comunidad de movimiento.

Las clases participantes se incluirán en un programa en línea y se promoverán a través de medios de comunicación locales.

Dear Dance Teachers, Studios, and Movement Practitioners of San Miguel de Allende,

We are the Co-Founding Directors of DANCE MONKS, an internationally traveled company based in San Miguel de Allende and the San Francisco Bay Area.

We invite you to join us in launching a National Dance Week in San Miguel de Allende! Our intention is to build interest in dance and movement, strengthen our local community, and support one another as teaching artists.

During the week of April 26–May 3, 2027, we invite local teachers to offer one FREE class open to the public. Offering a free class during this week is required for inclusion in the official event program. Simply submit your interest and class details through the form, below. Classes may be held at your current studio, park, community center, or other teaching space.

We invite movement teachers and practitioners of all disciplines and experience levels to participate, including but not limited to: Aerial Arts, West African dance, Tango, Creative Movement for Children, Cuban Folklore, Site-Specific Performance, Butoh, Contemporary Dance, Parkour, Breakdance, Belly Dance, Ballet, Flamenco, Martial Arts, Heels, Contact Improvisation, Soul Motion, Ecstatic Dance, Zapateado, Mexican Folklore, and more.

Whether you are an established teacher with many years of experience or are just beginning to share your practice, we welcome your participation. We also encourage everyone to spread the word, attend and support one another’s classes as we build a stronger movement community together.

Participating classes will be featured in an online program and promoted through local media.

DANCE MONKS was honored to perform as part of the now award-winning documentary, Call of Life: Facing the Mass Extinction (2014) directed by Monte Thompson. The film examined the impact of biodiversity loss on Earth’s ecosystems.

Este trabajo requiere una mirada sensible y cuidado para acompañar un proceso profundo centrado en las historias de mujeres. DANCE MONKS SEEKS FILMMAKER / VIDEOGRAPHER FOR “APAPACHO”

We are seeking a filmmaker/videographer for APAPACHO, a project taking place in the farming communities near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The work requires a sensitive eye, grounded presence, and care for a deep process centered around women’s stories. (We will share more details with those who feel called to participate in this project.)

The videographer will receive a stipend for filming and editing services.
