Community ~ Environment ~ Justice The Ecology Center was founded in 1969 as one of the first action-oriented environmental organizations in the country.
In the early days, the Ecology Center was a meeting place where environmental thinkers and activists gathered and distributed information through the bookstore, newsletter, library, and printing press. The Ecology Center activated the community by identifying environmental problems and demonstrating sound alternatives. Idealism was the mood of the day and staff members worked ‘round the clock for

This spring, your support can go twice as far. Through a partnership with singer Jack Johnson’s foundation, the first $2,500 our community gives will be matched, doubling the impact of every gift.
Your support helps protect and advance real recycling—pushing back against the plastic industry's efforts to weaken standards, ensuring policies like SB 54 deliver on their promise, holding producers accountable, and preventing more waste from entering our communities and the environment.
Be part of this moment. Give today and double your impact.

Natural dye with us (and more!) at our Fun with Food Waste event!
Fun with Food Waste is our first event of three Summer Solstice Week events at all three Berkeley Farmers’ Markets during the last week of June.
We’ll be kicking off summer with the extraction of gorgeous hues from those browning outer cabbage leaves, that turmeric powder in our spice drawer that we still haven’t touched, and more. Make your own design on free pre-mordanted scrap fabric or purchase a limited edition Ecology Center bandana to dye.
This event will also feature a scrappy, zero-waste food demo featuring former chef and current BFM program manager Daniel McChesney-Young, as well as an Ecology Center Store pop-up! Bring your reusable containers to take advantage of a mini bulk refill center.
See you Tuesday June 23rd, 2026 at the South Berkeley Farmers’ Market! 🌞
