Berkeley Racing Canoe Center
Recreational Paddling and Competitive Dragon Boat Racing
A big Year of the Rabbit THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the Dragon Boat Experience at Berkeley Yacht Club. Attendance was several times larger than what we first expected, but I think everyone had a good time. We counted something over 650 people on the water for the hands-on paddling experience between 10:30 and 1:00 pm.
Special thanks to all the volunteers from the Berkeley Racing Canoe Center who made this happen, and also to our three distinguished dignitaries for their participation in the Lion Dance ceremony: Rashi Kesarwani (District 1 Councilperson), Terry Taplin (District 2 Councilperson), and Modesto Covarrubias (Chair of the Civic Arts Commission). The Civic Arts Commission funded the event, please support their various public art and culture projects going forward.
For those of you who would like to follow up with more dragon boat paddling: The next public opportunity is the Berkeley Bay Festival on Saturday April 22, 11-4. It’s back after three years of pandemic cancellations.
If you are interested in joining us for a team practice session please contact [email protected]. If you are setting up a school field trip or camp outing, or even a corporate team-building session, contact [email protected]. Details on our website, https://thebrcc.org/
If you are interested in Berkeley Yacht Club (no, you don’t need to own a boat) it’s https://berkeleyyc.org/. And to complete the resource list, Cal Sailing Club will be giving free sailboat rides at Berkeley Bay festival on April 22. CSC is the cheapest AND the best way to learn to sail: https://cal-sailing.org/
A big mahalo to everyone from the Berkeley Racing Canoe Center, the Berkeley Yacht Club and the Civic Arts Commission.
It is through the tireless efforts of our volunteers that we are able to provide low-cost membership to water sports enthusiasts, serve hundreds of individual community members, and support a diverse group of social services and schools enabling them to better serve Berkeley and the Bay Area.
The Berkeley Racing Canoe Center (BRCC) has a dual mission of encouraging competitive dragon boat racing and recreational paddling with its inherent health and fitness benefits, and of providing water access to community members from all walks of life, ages, and abilities.
Our mission is to welcome paddlers from all walks of life, fitness levels and all abilities to continue to grow the sport while being inclusive, recreational, and competitive.
