Around October 4, Saturn reaches opposition. That means Earth is positioned between Saturn and the Sun. During opposition, Saturn looks brighter and larger. And it is visible nearly all night long!

✨ “Science is now their favorite subject because they get to have fun, ask questions, and be curious.”
That’s what Mallory Mullins, a Grades 4-5 teacher at Model Laboratory School in Richmond, Kentucky, shared after her students completed their first investigation in FOSS Soils, Rocks, and Landforms.
Through hands-on investigations, students made observations, analyzed evidence, explained their thinking, and discovered that science can be exciting, meaningful, and fun.
One of our favorite parts of Mallory’s story?
Students who didn’t think of themselves as “science kids” began to see themselves as scientists. 🔍🌎🪨
As educators, there’s nothing more rewarding than watching curiosity grow into confidence.

Before launching a FOSS module, take time to establish student groups and assign roles. A clear structure helps investigations run more smoothly, keeps students engaged, and builds accountability from day one.
✅ Getter: Manages materials and cleanup
✅ Starter: Organizes the work and gets the group going
✅ Recorder: Documents observations and ideas
✅ Reporter: Shares the group’s findings
A few minutes of preparation up front can save valuable instructional time later.

The Full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox is known as the Harvest Moon. Long before electric lights, its bright moonlight helped farmers continue harvesting crops after sunset.

🍂 Today, the autumnal equinox marks the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. The word equinox means “equal night,” and day and night are nearly the same length.
In FOSS modules like Earth and Sun and Changes in the Sky, students explore how patterns in daylight, the Sun’s position, and seasonal change help us understand our place in space.
Familiar phenomena like the changing seasons can inspire new questions and discoveries.
