BREAKING: California Sues ICE, DHS Officials to Halt Construction of Proposed Gilroy Detention Facility
California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Santa Clara County Counsel Tony LoPresti are suing to stop construction of the controversial new ICE facility outside Gilroy. The lawsuit alleges the federal government violated multiple federal laws by moving forward without required environmental review or coordination with local officials.
"President Trump's mass detention and deportation campaign has led to cruel, inhumane, and unacceptable conditions at immigration holding and detention facilities across California," Attorney General Bonta said. "We're suing to stop this project and protect the interests of California communities."
County Counsel Tony LoPresti added, "We're proud to stand alongside Attorney General Bonta in opposing this reckless attempt to build an ICE facility on sensitive and protected land without regard to its impacts on the environment, the community, and the humans who would be detained there."
Despite decades of documented concerns about chemical contamination at the site, construction is already underway... setting up a new legal showdown with the Trump administration and marking California's 71st lawsuit against Trump since returning to office.
