You’ve probably heard the term “oxidative stress”… but what does it actually mean? And why should you care—especially after 40?

Think of oxidative stress a little like “internal rust.”

Your body naturally produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), often called free radicals, through completely normal things like breathing, digestion, exercise and producing energy.

That’s not necessarily bad.

The problem happens when you’re producing more free radicals than your antioxidant defenses can handle. That imbalance is oxidative stress.

And it can affect a LOT more than most people realize:
🧠 Brain health + brain fog
💪 Muscle function + recovery
⚡ Energy + mitochondrial function
❤️ Cardiovascular health
🔥 Inflammation
🍽️ Metabolic health + insulin sensitivity
🧬 Cellular aging
✨ Skin + visible aging

Here’s the part I really want people to understand:

The goal isn’t to eliminate oxidative stress.

Exercise actually creates some oxidative stress—and that temporary stress helps signal your body to adapt, improve its antioxidant defenses and become more resilient.
The issue is when the total load becomes too high and recovery can’t keep up.

Chronic stress, poor sleep, inadequate nutrition, blood sugar swings, environmental exposures and even training too hard without enough recovery can all add to that load.

And no, the answer isn’t simply buying a giant bottle of antioxidants. 😉

Strength training, daily movement, sleep, stress management, colorful whole foods, adequate protein and supporting your metabolic health all matter.

I went much deeper into what oxidative stress is, how it affects your mitochondria, muscle, metabolism and aging—and what you can actually do about it in my latest article.

This is the bowl I make when I want dinner to feel like a warm hug and do something genuinely good for my gut at the same time. The roasted roots bring the fiber, the lentils bring staying power, and the miso-tahini dressing ties it together while sneaking in a little fermented goodness. Here is how it comes together.

What you need: Roughly two cups chopped root vegetables (sweet potato, carrot, beet, whatever the season handed you), one cup cooked lentils, one cup cooked grain like farro or brown rice, olive oil, salt, and pepper.

For the dressing: two tablespoons tahini, one tablespoon white miso, one teaspoon maple syrup, a squeeze of lemon, and warm water to thin.

1) Toss your chopped vegetables in olive oil, salt, and pepper, then roast at 400 until they are tender and caramelized at the edges, around 30 minutes. Those crispy edges are where the magic lives.

2) While the roots roast, get your grain and lentils warm and ready. Cooking them ahead on a Sunday makes this a ten-minute dinner on a busy night.

3) Stir the tahini, miso, maple, and lemon together, then add warm water a little at a time until it pours off the spoon. The miso brings a savory depth that makes people ask what is in it.

4) Layer grain, lentils, and roasted roots, then pour the dressing over the top with a generous hand.

5) A scatter of pumpkin seeds or a handful of greens rounds it out and adds a little texture.

This bowl feeds your gut, holds you over for hours, and tastes like fall figured out how to show off. Leftovers are honestly even better the next day.

“If it’s important to you, you’ll find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse.”

My college coach used to say that, and it still sticks with me.

My most consistent clients aren’t the ones with perfect schedules. They have busy weeks, travel, low-energy days, and aches and pains like everyone else. What makes the difference is that they keep finding their way back.

Can’t do a 45-minute workout? Do 20—or even 10. Traveling? Open a workout in the member app. Have an achy shoulder or sore knee? Tell your trainer. Your workout isn’t set in stone, and we can adapt it for you.

Some days, consistency looks like a great strength session. Other days, it looks like walking into the studio and saying, “I only have 20 minutes. What can I do?”

We can work with that. 💪

On a GLP-1? Don’t just lose weight. Protect your muscle. 💪

GLP-1s can be an incredibly useful tool—but getting lighter and getting healthier aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Especially after 40.

As we age, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important. Add perimenopause, menopause, declining estrogen, age-related changes in testosterone, or eating significantly less on a GLP-1, and protecting muscle needs to be part of the plan.

Here are 5 things I want you thinking about:

💪 STRENGTH TRAIN
Not just random workouts. Follow a progressive strength program that gives your muscles a reason to stick around. Ideally, strength train 2–3+ times per week.

🥩 PRIORITIZE PROTEIN
When appetite drops, protein can easily drop with it. Build your meals around protein and spread it throughout the day.

🍽️ EAT ENOUGH
The goal is fat loss—not seeing how little you can eat. Under-fueling can leave you tired, make training harder and make it more difficult to maintain muscle.

🚶‍♀️ STAY ACTIVE
Walk. Take the stairs. Hike. Garden. Play with the dog. Your workouts matter, but so does what you do during the rest of your day.

😴 RECOVER WELL
Sleep, stress management and recovery aren't extra credit. They're part of the program.

This is why I'm so passionate about combining GLP-1 education with strength training, nutrition and lifestyle support.

I've personally navigated perimenopause, inflammation and GLP-1 use, and I'm a GLP-1 Lifestyle Coach, Certified Personal Trainer, Perimenopause & Menopause Specialist, Functional Nutrition & Metabolism Specialist and Certified Peptide Practitioner.

I don't want your only measure of success to be:

“I lost ___ pounds.”

I want to hear:

“I'm stronger.”
“I have more energy.”
“I'm moving better.”
“My body composition is changing.”
“I feel good.”

Here are 3 ways we can help..
① Foundations Strength Lab

② 14-Day Semi-Private Personal Training Trial

③ Personal Training

And coming in October: our GLP-1 Protocol Nutrition Program—personalized nutrition and real-food guidance to support muscle, energy and long-term health.

Don’t just chase a smaller body. Build a stronger one.

“Women over 40 need to lift heavy.”

Okay…but what does “heavy” actually mean? 🤷‍♀️

Because heavy is different for everyone—and it should be.

It doesn’t mean walking into the gym, grabbing the biggest dumbbells you can find and hoping your knees remember what to do. 😂

For one person, getting stronger might start with a 15-pound kettlebell. For someone else, it might mean deadlifting 100+ pounds.

Both can be strength training.

And MEN—you’re not off the hook. 😉

Men tend to be a little more confident in the weight room, often because they’ve had more experience lifting weights.

Does that mean they’re always doing it correctly or following a well-designed progressive program?

Ummm...not necessarily. 😂 But hey, that’s a conversation for another day.

The reality is that men also lose muscle, strength and power as they age. Maintaining muscle and lifting progressively matters for men AND women.

Before worrying about HOW heavy you're lifting, learn:

✓ How to brace and use your core
✓ How to squat and hinge correctly
✓ How to push and pull
✓ How to choose the right weight for YOU
✓ How to control your range of motion
✓ When to add weight—and when NOT to
✓ How to modify around injuries and limitations

Heavy isn't a specific number. It’s a weight that challenges YOU enough to create adaptation while maintaining good form and control.

We want to build muscle, bone, strength, balance and confidence—not just prove how much weight we can move.

Technique first. Confidence next. Load follows.

And yes…eventually we want you picking up some heavier stuff. 😉💪

And who teaches you matters.

Our Foundations Strength Lab is coached by women over 40 who understand perimenopause, menopause, weight loss, injuries, aches and pains—and how training needs to change as we age.

We meet you where you are, teach you how to train your body NOW, and progressively build from there.

Cardio isn’t the problem. But cardio alone isn’t the answer.

And before anyone comes for me 😂 — I LOVE teaching my Barre class. I love walking, hiking, yoga, Pilates and getting a good sweat on.

Those 5–8 lb weights in Barre absolutely do something. They build muscular endurance, improve control, and yes—you can see and feel results.

But eventually, if we want to continue building strength and muscle, our bodies need a new challenge.

That’s where progressive strength training comes in.

Progressive overload simply means that over time, we intentionally ask your muscles to do a little more—more weight, more reps, better control, greater range of motion or a harder variation.

And NO, you don't need to destroy yourself every workout.

For years, fitness culture taught us that a workout only “counted” if we were dripping in sweat and completely exhausted.

Bootcamps. HIIT. CrossFit-style workouts. Random exercises. Random weights. What did I lift last week? Who knows—but I almost died, so it must have worked. 😂

Sweating feels GREAT. Being out of breath feels like you worked hard. But neither automatically means you're getting stronger.

With a well-designed strength program, we know what you lifted. We track it. We repeat important movement patterns. We progress them. And we give your body time to adapt.

Walking is great. Barre is great. Yoga, Pilates, running, hiking and HIIT all have a place.

You don't have to give up the movement you love. You need to ADD strength to it.

Especially in our 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, muscle supports our bones, metabolism, balance, power, joints and independence.

The goal isn't to leave every workout wrecked.

The goal is to leave your training program stronger than when you started. 💪

WANT TO LEARN HOW?

That's exactly why we created our 8-Week Foundations Strength Lab.

We'll teach you HOW to strength train—not just hand you a workout. You'll learn proper technique, how to choose weights, progressive overload, mobility, recovery and how to build strength for life.

We’re currently taking applications and determining the best days/times for our next group.
