One of my favorite engagement images because of so many things. The relaxed positioning of this couple fits seamlessly with their environment. The direct light coming in from the left side and her hair having movement from the wind give this an editorial gritty feel. Raw, and bad-ass...my goal for photos I present to all clients.

This was in NYC within the High Line which is a 1.5 mile park built on a historic, elevated rail line on the west side of Manhattan. Way unique and well worth a visit to anyone in the area.

This is why I love when children are included in their parents weddings!! The authenticness and meaningfulness that comes out of the photos are memorable in their rawness! Kids can make adults feel that it's ok to be a kid again!

Amie + Amy celebrated their recent marriage by having a party this summer at Aspen Hall in Bend, Oregon. It was my honor to photograph them during this special time where their friends could show their loving support and throw down some dance moves with them!

WEDDING PREVIEW: I never get tired of these Central Oregon Weddings! Here's an intimate wedding I photographed in Sisters recently that I found very heartfelt.

Photos from Byron Roe Photography's post 03/14/2025

I have to say that photographing wedding proposals is the closest thing to me envisioning I'm "James Bond". The planning plus playing the role of "not a wedding photographer stalking a couple" are adventures for me that will never get old! This wedding proposal with {Stephanie + Stephen} was exactly that and knowing Brasada like the back of my hand, from photographing many weddings at Brasada such as this one with {Amy + Grant} over the last 15 years, made it that much more fun.

How to not tip off the future bride is the most important part of the equation and this is not easy for us guys! From my own experience as well as talking to others, it's typical that we have our #1 proposal option as the only option. The #1 option became that option because it was the best idea and our partner only deserves the best, right? That's the way I looked at it, as I thought the coolest way to propose to Wendy would be to do a xc ski to Todd Lake near Mt Bachelor, OR and with an upcoming trip to AZ to see my parents as well as having her mom & sister down in the AZ area visiting family as well.....let's say things could not be arranged better.....except that it was Friday and we were leaving for AZ that Monday and most importantly......THERE WAS NO SNOW!

So back at Brasada, we had to choose where he would propose based on the sunlight at the time when they'd be in a certain place as well as choosing a location that was away from the public as much as possible for this intimate moment. I'm not going to lie in that there is a bit of luck when everything falls into place as there is a lot we just are not in control of, (such as the direction the couple ends up facing when the knee goes down)...but to be honest, that is exactly what makes it so awesomely fun and special. Ok, so the idea was that at a certain time they would be making their way down to the trestle bridge which is a fantastic focal point at Brasada Ranch for a wedding proposal.

Fast forward to the big day and I was playing my part on the bridge as the nature photographer who was getting quite curious about certain flowers all the while making quick glances to make sure I didn't miss them on the bridge before they continued down to a pond where the magic would happen. Whew, they are on the bridge and we're doing this! Stephen gives me a quick glance to make sure I'm all in, (oh yea, we've never met face to face before), before he begins walking down the path with Stephanie. I wait a little bit so she doesn't think it weird that some dude is following them down with a camera and now it's game time. I make my way quickly to the bridge entrance to the path which drops down to the pond and am hoping they are not walking too fast! The path is flattening out now and I need to circle around to where I envisioned I needed to be, in relation to the direction Stephen was going to stand, so it's time to get in the bushes and dirt and move fast! Ok, they've stopped walking and now I'm hiding behind a bush in the perfect place with the perfect angle to photograph them.

My heart's beating fast as I'm trying to hide and avoid being seen but not missing that 1 second moment as he drops to a knee, and.....wait, he's going down.....game time! Once Stephanie has her focus on the ring and what's happening, I have much more freedom to photograph what's happening without the worry of distracting them both. As I remember, I even was able to move over to a completely different vantage point for a different angle without being noticed and by that point it would not have been a big deal as I already had gotten the images needed and knew we would have time for some artistic creative portraits within the property. After the moment was over, I hear Stephen say to Stephanie, "so I should probably introduce you to Byron, he's the photographer hiding behind that tree over there"......

Hey, wait....I never finished my story about my own proposal. Well, it's Friday and there's no snow....now it's Saturday and there's no snow and I'm finally starting to think I need to come up with Plan B...Crap! So Sunday morning arrives....along with about 1.5 feet of fresh snow! GAME ON!!!

Plus Size Wedding Dress Photo Session in Paris, France:

Now this is a story you just can't make up! This is about a unique opportunity in Paris where we got the chance to photograph designer plus size wedding dresses. Wendy and my dream was to spend an extended time over in Europe at some point when our daughter Shelby was young to give her life experiences you could only get through the wonderful gift of travel. We have both grown up with open minds and hearts to be at a place in life, filled with gratitude in the desire to connect with different cultures and everything great which goes along with this curiosity and love.

That dream became reality in 2019 as we headed over to Europe for three months. On our way we took a fantastic side trip to Manhattan for an engagement session on the Brooklyn Bridge.

A big part of many of my best memories traveling the world has been with Couchsurfing.org, (check it out)! After finding a family in North Eastern Paris who accepted our couchsurfing request for a full week, (which is longer than the typical 2-3 day stays)! Iohanna and Jean-Luc invited us into their home with their 3 children and it was an amazing experience!

So, Iohanna home schools the children and they have a group of homeschoolers that get together at times for socialization/connection. We went to one of these gatherings and while the kids played, we got to meet some of the other parents including a lady by the name of Carol. I always love learning about what people's careers are about so when Carol told me she had just taken the jump to start a wedding dress business focused on plus size brides I was very intrigued and excited at how we were in the same industry! I remember telling her that I've always wanted to do a photo shoot with brides in Paris and much to my amazement, she invites us to join her for a photo session she was planning for the following week.

I cannot thank Iohanna and family, Carol, and all the models for graciously including us in your lives for this wonderful opportunity in Paris to photograph designer plus size wedding dresses. We all went away from this experience with warm hearts!

Brooklyn Bridge, NYC Engagement Photo Session

Ignoring the crowds and focusing on the body heat helped {Fernando + Glynnis’s} engagement photography session on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City bring in the smiles and snuggles…can you believe snow on the Brooklyn Bridge?….sweet! I loved seeing the traffic below the walkways as well- it was a bit surreal.

It’s funny that I can still remember how on display I felt when I was new to the wedding photography industry and now that never crosses my mind. It’s nice to have lots of experiences on my side to help me stay focused during key moments!! Lot’s to think about in these situations such as making sure the couple feels comfortable with public displays of affection around a bunch of other prying eyes, not getting in the way of the flowing public traffic, not getting run over, making sure my $ photo equipment doesn’t walk off, deciding if we have enough images which show the couple alone without others around and if not where can we achieve this…?

These engagement sessions are brilliant at helping couples get in that romantic mood and connect on a much deeper level, and have photos of the two of you not in wedding attire …in addition to the important trust building which happens between a photographer and clients which then becomes a huge benefit on their wedding day as they can be far less worrying about things like how the photos are turning out and how they are looking in them. I love it when clients say….yea, I know I look awesome in your photos so I never worry about what your getting – I trust they will be amazing. I only want couples to be thinking about each other on their wedding day and definitely not about how the wedding photos are turning out!!

This engagement photography session on the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC will be another adventure Wendy and I will likely never forget!
