Welcome to the British River Running Academy, est. 1847. Today's lesson: sweepers.
Now, if you're wondering what on earth this is, here's the story.
About 20 years ago we were shooting a steelhead conservation piece in the Pacific Northwest with our buddy Dave McCoy of Emerald Water Anglers. Between takes, Dave went under a down tree, and we got it on camera. For the last 20 years, Dave has been asking us if we know where that footage is, because he thinks it's the funniest thing ever. We never could find it.
Then, recently, we started a new steelhead project and I was digging through some seriously old drives, and there it was. The file was corrupted. We managed to recover the video, but the audio was gone for good.
So we did what any responsible filmmakers would do and hired the British River Running Academy to provide the narration. (Wink)
Twenty-five years of filming has meant meeting a lot of great, funny people and collecting all the little moments that happen along the way. This one's for our longtime friend Dave. It's dumb, it's just for grins and an inside jike, and we hope it's not a total waste of your time.
Cheerio, and mind the wood.

Last day. The public comment period on the Roadless Rule repeal closes tonight. Everything we've posted this week — the rivers, the wildlife, the old growth, the clear-cuts — comes down to this one action.

They gave you 15 more days. Take them.
The Forest Service just extended the comment deadline on the Roadless Rule repeal to October 6 — after 164 members of Congress and conservation groups asked for 120. They got 15. Still time to be counted.
44.7 million acres of unroaded National Forest — the last unbroken water and backcountry left in 36 states and Puerto Rico — on the table for new roads and logging.
Comment before Oct 6. Link in bio. Docket FS-2025-0001.

1 day left. Author Rick Bass has spent decades writing about wild country like this — and fighting to keep it wild. Tomorrow's the deadline. If you've been meaning to comment, today's the day.

2 days left. More roads doesn't mean less fire risk — it often means more. Roads bring more human ignition sources into dry country, and fragmented forest burns differently than intact forest. The data doesn't back up the argument that repealing this rule makes anything safer.

Night night world. Audio Up!

3 days left. This is the Tongass — old-growth logs stacked next to a logging road that shouldn't have been there in the first place. This is exactly what opening up roadless areas leads to.

Breakfast of champions in the high country. Thanks Jimmy H for leaving me two eggs and a piece of toast! Sure beats the freeze dried!

4 days left. Every stump like this used to be a tree that took longer to grow than any of us have been alive. Roadless protection is the reason so much of what's left is still standing.

After today’s lightning storm it’s easy to imagine the chaos of this old trees finals day…
