Grab a card at the Bend Visitor Center (or use the web app at bendaletrail.app), then hit the trail: visit local breweries, sip their freshest fresh hop brews, and get a stamp at each stop. Connect four or more breweries on your card for a shot at prizes—and get entered to win a Bend beer-cation during Bend Ale Trail Month.

The grand prize? A three-night stay in Bend, $300 in brewery gift cards, a Deschutes Brewery Tour, and a swag bag full of Bend goodies.

Twenty-five years ago, Bill Smith looked out his office window in the Old Mill District and saw a flag flying from one of the smokestacks.

"I thought, 'holy mackerel, who did that?'" he remembered.

It was Tim Keeton, of Keeton & King Construction. His company was involved in Old Mill District construction, so he knew the cable system that reached the top. In the hours after the September 11 attacks, he borrowed a flag from the local National Guard office, climbed 200+ feet with a steel pipe and pipe clamps, and hung it himself.

A permanent flagpole went up not long after. The flag's flown there ever since, and it's become one of the most recognizable symbols of Bend.
