3. I raced bikes for over 14 years, ~ten of them professionally for . I won some races and I also didn't win some races. I love sprinting and mud and winning, and I used to feel weird admitting the latter, but now I don't. Most importantly, some of the humans I met along the way became family.

4. I was born and raised in New Jersey and I love the east coast fiercely. I am white and grew up with an extended mixed-race family (Korean + Guatemalan). We are close and I love our Korean-Italian-American-Guatemalan chaos. Don't f**k with us.

This past weekend, w̶e̶ ̶l̶o̶s̶t̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶o̶n̶e̶ a 22-year old Black man was straight up murdered in our little community in little Bend, Oregon. The language we use to describe racist + senseless acts of violence is important. It's the lens through which we experience and respond and remember. It's how we offer some small morsel of respect to the dead. Once someone is gone, it's everything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We lost someone, yes. But let it be known that the most prominent active verb here is murder. Someone was murdered after asking out the murderer's girlfriend. Period.

The language we use is important.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a human first and small business owner second, I can't not acknowledge and hold space for this individual (whose name I 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 say, over and over again, including at tonight's vigil: BARRY WASHINGTON) and for all the other Black men and women whom we continue to shoot, to incarcerate, to be so goddamn reckless with.

In holding (loud) space for BARRY WASHINGTON, I turn to
's "𝔻𝕠𝕟'𝕥 ℂ𝕒𝕝𝕝 𝕌𝕤 𝔻𝕖𝕒𝕕"—an expansive book of poetry that faces the ugly and the beauty and the in-between head on, shoulders squared, without apology.
