Friday, we had an opportunity to help lead a group in a Forest Bathing experience! It was a great time to just be in the woods, look for treasures and reflect on what God has create, and how he specifically designed it perfectly to fit together, woven together.

We consulted on a mature Live Oak with an inclusion failure. Included bark occurs when a tree forms a "V" crotch and traps bark (or the bark becomes "included" in the tree). In this area, the tree will never fuse or grow together. Often, over time, this area will begin to sprout roots and grow these roots internally, using the dead bark as a growing media. As this internal root system grows and expands it becomes a force that pushes against the weak attachment (fulcrum). As the main stems above the v-crotch grow, they also expand, upward increasing the inclusion and outward pushing against each other. Lastly, as these main stems grow above the v-crotch area, they add weight with pulls against the weekend inclusion area downward in a separation fashion and as the crown expands, this creates more surface area, which catches the wind easier. Not specific to included bark, but important to understand is the fact that a tree with multiple stems twist and rotate in winds at the area of attachment. This is why a single stem is more desirable than a multiple stem on a tree selection.
