And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The vision that God has given me is to be instruments of Him to edify believers, and evangelize to the world, by bringing deliverance to the total man: mind, body, and soul to Glorify Him. P.B.S. Pinchback made history in 1872 as the first Black governor of any U.S. state — right here in Louisiana.
Born free in Georgia, Pinchback later moved to Louisiana and rose through leadership during the Reconstruction era. When political turmoil removed the sitting governor, Pinchback stepped in and served as Acting Governor of Louisiana for 35 days.
🔥 That means Louisiana was the first state in America to have a Black governor.
And here’s something powerful — he also helped establish Southern University, one of Louisiana’s historic pillars of higher education.
Also Worth Mentioning:
Oscar Dunn**:** First Black Lieutenant Governor in the United States — also in Louisiana.
Louisiana was a major ground zero for Black political advancement during Reconstruction.
Why This Matters
Louisiana’s soil doesn’t just produce culture, food, and music…
It produced trailblazers who stepped into power when the nation said they shouldn’t.
From the State Capitol to the pulpit to business ownership — legacy lives here.

Did you know? Before he became a world-famous actor, Samuel L. Jackson got himself kicked out of Morehouse College in 1969 — for holding Martin Luther King's father hostage. Jackson and a group of other young activists staged a lock-in to demand better conditions for Black students on campus, holding college leaders prisoner for two full days. Though the university agreed to make much-needed changes, Jackson was expelled. He then briefly joined the Black Power movement — until the FBI showed up at his mother's door and told her that her son would soon be dead if he didn't leave Atlanta.
