ON THIS DAY IN BLACK HISTORY — SEPTEMBER 19, 1865

Atlanta University—one of the institutions that would eventually become Clark Atlanta University—was founded in Atlanta, Georgia.

Established only months after the Civil War by formerly enslaved educators James Tate and Grandison B. Daniels, Atlanta University became the first HBCU in the Southern United States. Its mission was revolutionary: to educate newly freed Black Americans and prepare them for leadership, service, and advancement.

Atlanta University later became the nation’s first graduate institution to award degrees to African Americans. In 1988, it merged with Clark College, founded in 1869, to form the institution now known as Clark Atlanta University.

From freedom came education.
From education came opportunity.
From opportunity came generations of Black excellence.
