🌟Leigh Garcia🌟 .leighgarcia
From Leigh:
As a biracial Latina, a seventh-generation Texan of European descent on my mom’s side and granddaughter of Mexican immigrants on my dad’s, I have followed the roots of my own ancestry to shape my artistic practice. Major events in Texas history such as the Mexican-American War, Battle of the Alamo, Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and Bracero Program have created a complex relationship between my two cultures: white Texans and mestizo Mexicans. Products of these historical events—particularly undocumented immigration and the racialization of Mexicans—are both the context and focus of my work. Using printmaking, papermaking, and sculpture, I explore my biracial identity and familial history while highlighting aspects of racial and generational privilege/oppression.

For the 2026 MAPC conference, PRINTELLIGENCE, at Louisiana State University this October, we are thrilled to award three Professional Development and Research Grants— one each for undergraduate, graduate, and emerging artists. Presented every two years, these grants support artistic growth and research projects through participation in a printmaking workshop, creative research conducted at a printmaking atelier, residency, or other travel necessary to pursue a body of work or investigation of a print-related topic.
$1,000 will be awarded for each of the following categories:
Undergraduate Winner: Magdalena Holtz
Graduate Winner: Lujiang Li
Emerging Artist Winner: Paige Nguyen
Recipients will present their funded research at the upcoming MAPC Conference in October during an opening reception showcasing their research. As awardees, their conference registration fee will also be waived.
Along with Dustin Brinkman and Jacob Taylor Gibson, Co-Chairs of the Grants Committee, and everyone on the 2024-’26 MAPC board, we offer a sincere thank you to our panel of jurors:
